The original creators of the RimWorld ‘Combat Extended’ mode have something cooking, and it’s looking pretty good. The indie developer Vivid Storm Interactive are unveiling their first title, Ascent of Ashes in tandem with indie publisher Camlann Games. What we’re getting is a colony sim that offers real-time-with-pause tactics, and intricate gameplay.
Ascent of Ashes raised more than 42,000EUR in an oversubscribed Kickstarter that closed last October 2022. Their Steam page went live last November 9, ang almost immediately acquired more than 1,000 wishlists in its first 48 hours. While the game is currently in Pre-Alpha development, there’s much to expect.

The game combines dark humor; gritty, stylistic post-apocalyptic art with an isometric viewpoint–something rather unique, compared to the usual top down POV. Set on a mysterious planet, the player must lead a team of survivors in building a base, exploring a massive procedurally generated world, and uncovering the mysteries of the planet you’ve found yourself stranded on.
We’re guaranteed high octane real-time-with-pause combat, familiar base building mechanics, “choices matter”-style colony management, nearly infinite replayability, fascinating human & alien characters, and a whole lot more. Definitely a title worth the wait.
Ascent of Ashes will be available on Windows, MacOs & Linux, and is set for release to Early Access on Steam & GOG in late 2023.
