Technicians Making Noise
French studio Bulwark Studio’s turn based dungeon crawler Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is a fantastic slice of simple but effective strategy. But what really elevates it is the soundtrack. Composed by David Guillaume, this series of cyber-gothic compositions make up one of the best indie OSTs in recent memory.

Context
You play as the commander of an army of tech priests – humans who worship machines and are revolted by the weakness of their own flesh. You recruit and command them aboard a giant cathedral-like spaceship that hurtles through the void of space dodging eldritch horrors while on the hunt for ancient technology to study. You pull up in orbit above a planet covered in the catacombs of undead space Egyptians called Necrons and get to tomb raiding whilst trying to keep the gradually awakening Necrons at bay.
Execution
Through the use of swelling organs, pulsing percussion, snarling synthesisers and chanting choral parts, the instrumentation is an expressive tool that reflects the priests themselves – part human, part machine, and fuelled by faith. Guillaume has brought this insanely over-the-top setting to life, managing to do so in a way that is understated, effective, and distinctly original.
