Canadian four-man indie team Hat Games have an invitation to a chaotic 2D party brawler to send your way. No need to bring a hat, you will be provided with one when you play the game. King of the Hat started life on the Discord game storefront back when that was a thing where it quickly amassed a loyal community of over 8,000 hat wielding maniacs. After pulling the trigger on Switch and PC ports of the game, it’s the PC one that’s arriving first through Steam on October 22nd.
In the run up to launch there’s an open beta running until Saturday this week on October 8th to get down and dirty with. All you have to do to play is jump on to King of the Hat’s official discord and ping the devs for access. Aren’t going to have time this week? No worries, there’s a free Steam demo that you can leap into as well.

King of the Hat supports 2 – 4 players, making it perfect for a digital first date, digital first date with a third wheel or lunchtime/post work games with colleagues and friends. Based on what we’ve played of it so far combined with Hat Games popping up at fighting game cons all around the world this year there’s a clearly a competitive opportunity for the truly hardcore platform fighter fan that worships at the altar of Super Smash Bros. here. But judging by how fast the second-to-second gameplay is, it seems like no caster would be able to keep up. We would like to throw it down to the shout casting community and hereby proclaim King of the Hat ‘too fast to cast’. Prove us wrong, we’d love to see it.
Jump into the demo or wishlist King of the Hat on Steam via the link below, give those hard working indie devs at Hat Games some love!
