Indie developer Jaspel is gearing up to release their unique, inventory management-based roguelike into early access. Backpack Hero sees players diving headfirst into a variety of dungeons while taking on enemies with a rather interesting weapon loadout–that loadout being whatever’s stocked in their backpack.
Inventory management is the name of the game, and this roguelike will make it a point to constantly remind you. Item placement and positioning will determine the level of effectiveness of said items, so being a pro in Tetris already gives you quite the advantage. For example, some items will garner a shield boost when placed next to pieces of armor. The same goes for healing and debuffs, and possibly dangerous items dropped by enemies. This demands quite a bit of tidiness and a lot of attention to detail if you wish to beat the biggest, baddest foes.
Players who’ll pick up Backpack Hero on early access will be treated to a variety of items, each item has its own unique effect. Now, it’s all a matter of how you’ll stick them in your knapsack along with all the other things you’ve come across. Purse the Packrat, Tote the Toad, and CR8 the Robot will also be readily available to join you on your dungeon hoarding adventures.
The variety of enemies will definitely keep you busy through the endless randomly generated maps you choose to enter. This is a roguelike after all, so experiencing the same would be pretty lame. Not with this game.
